Movies and Generation Gap
64
My girl students recommended me some movies, of which they sang high praise.
Two of the movies are in English, “The Princess Diaries”, and “Ella Enchanted”, and the Chinese one is “One Night in Supermarket”. Coincidence is that the same young lady stars these two English movies, and they both carry about the same plot. The same heroin, same story---Cinderella becomes princess or meets her Mr. Right, and they / she live(s) happily ever after. Not every girl is so lucky, so most of them have to turn to movies to “realize” their dreams. Young girls' dreams, beautiful princess, castle, handsome young man. Long have I known that I am no princess, and my husband is no Mr. Charmingly Millionaire. Then, what is my dream, if any? Well, I do dream sometimes, though not frequently. I dream of winning a lottery, so that I can buy a big house; I dream of having a lovely daughter, who I will make the happiest and most beautiful; I dream of inviting my parents to my home, preparing a feast for each meal; I dream of travelling many places with my dear Ben… Then, I woke up from daydreaming, and sniffed at my students’ recommendation, though I am appreciative of it.The sniff is followed by a long sigh; it’s so good to be young, who can always dream. Anyhow, I am old!
